Should The British Or The European Union Get Their Knickers In A Twist Over Brexit?

The continuing furor in the UK, the EU and markets all over the world over “Brexit” will turn out to be substantially misguided. As the Brits themselves are fond of saying: “don’t get your knickers in a twist.” Simply put, the reality is—which even some of the most astute economic commentators and market analysts fail to appreciate—Brexit is not a binary choice. As a veteran negotiator of trade agreements and investment treaties, there are literally a multitude of possible outcomes.

Job Creation, Opportunity and Pride in American Political Life

The political heat this year has been hard on free trade. Protectionism appeals because of a simplistic sense that “good” manufacturing jobs will return to America, restoring middle-class opportunity and pride. The reality, known intimately in supply chain circles, is rather more complex.

Bad News for Boston Beer, Good News for Craft Beer

Craft beer sales continue to grow, though not at the same double-digit pace we've become accustomed to. That's to be expected, though, because the industry has matured to a point where moving the needle is more difficult. The Brewers Association, the trade group that represents small, independent craft brewers, reports that over the first six months of 2016, production volume rose 8% year over year, a big drop from the 13% growth rate recorded in the first half of 2015, and just half as much as was seen in 1H 2014.

Should You Invest In Seattle Real Estate?

Stuck at the edge of America, with rain and clouds more than half the year, Seattle has managed over the decades to produce what the rest of America wants: first lumber and ships, then airplanes, then software, now e-commerce and trade with China. Without a hinterland to service, however, the Seattle economy depends a lot on demand that happens elsewhere, making it vulnerable to consumer cycles, tech cycles, and international trade politics. Investments in apartment buildings will probably be successful in the short run, as rents rise rapidly, but the heavy dependence on the continued growth of the tech industry makes longer term-investments questionable. Expected cash flows that incorporate endless rent increases are too optimistic.

You want Trayce Thompson and his .226/.302/.436 overall mark, with his .207/.298/.402 June line and .143/.211/.286 in July in right instead? Dividend Investing In A Roth IRA

Reducing your investing fees is the best way to generate higher total returns. Most investors focus on minimizing fees from their brokerages. If you made four trades a month (two buys and two sells) over 30 years, that comes to $14,400 at $10 a trade. If you get serious and shop around for a cheaper brokerage, you could reduce trading costs to $5 a trade (as an example). This would result in savings of $7,200 over the course of your investing career.

We’ll all know on July 12, when the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague rules over a case between the Philippines and China over the South China Sea. The case was filed by the Philippines back in 2013 under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the primary treaty governing international maritime law—both countries are party to the treaty. The ruling is expected to determine who will write the navigation rules for South China Sea, and therefore, control trade in the region, China or Philippines’s close ally, the US.

Would You Swap Your Employer's Share Of The Payroll Tax For A Consumption Tax?

Would you be willing to swap a new, broad-based consumption tax for your employer’s share of the Social Security and Medicare payroll tax? According to a new paper  by my colleagues Jim Nunns and Joe Rosenberg, it would be a good trade for all but the highest income taxpayers. Not only that, but the change would be more economically efficient, unlikely to drive up prices, and relatively easy to administer. If it were set at a rate of 4.1 percent, the new consumption tax would raise the same amount of money as the employer share of the payroll tax.

Online Shoppers In Asia Make The Most Of The Devalued British Pound

Nigel Farage urged for a ‘pragmatic, realistic, grown up’ approach to cutting a free trade deal in the wake of Brexit before promptly resigning, Chris Evans left Top Gear after one season, and the ASOS website crashed due to a ‘power error’ and 'def not Brexit'. In the UK if you step away from your phone or news feed for more than an hour you're likely to miss someone resigning, but in Asia and Australia, it might mean you miss a sizeable saving on depreciating currencies. The website of British online retailer, ASOS, was down for 24 hours on Friday April 24 (HKT), in what many speculated was a reaction to the plummeting value of the pound, coinciding with Britain’s decision to leave the EU. "Yes, the site is down. This is because of a power outage at a third party data centre that hosts our servers," the brand said in a statement to Fairfax Media.

Political Standoff Threatens Taiwan's Crucial Trade Ties With China

Venerated credit rating firm Moody’s Investors Service sounded a warning this week about Taiwan because its biggest trading partner China officially killed dialogue last month. Talks between the political rivals of 70 years were zombie-like even before that as China tried in vain to make Taiwan accept its condition that both negotiate as parts of one country. Moody’s isn’t threatening to lower Taiwan’s credit rating of “Aa3 stable” at the moment but says silent treatment between the two sides will eventually hurt the export-reliant island’s trade. The rating now, however, is based partly on Taiwan’s “competitive economy” in spite of “geopolitical risk related to its relationship with China with periodic tensions.”

The Week Ahead: The Investors Best Crisis Strategy

It has been a rough week for both investors and traders after the surprising UK vote over a week ago. In the June 18th column "The Week Ahead: Is The Fear Trade Your Best Bet Now?" I made the case that investing based on a potential vote in favor of leaving the European Union was not a good idea. My market analysis at the time indicated that the "market clearly seems positioned for a No vote on June 23rd". It has been my experience that market shocks and Black Swan events must be viewed in the context of the market's long-term trend. When such events take place in bear market investors should have very light long positions in stocks so any damage should have a limited impact. The fact that the monthly NYSE Advance/Decline line made a new high in May and was acting stronger than prices provided strong evidence that the stock market's major trend was positive. So what can an investor do?

Will Brexit Affect Global Supply Chains?

There has been a lot of doom and gloom surrounding Brexit.  It is clear that in the short term Brexit has created uncertainty and roiled markets. In the longer term I believe its impact will be minimal. It is mainly tariffs and trade restrictions that would have the largest impact on global supply chains. I believe both the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) will seek to keep tariff restrictions to a minimum. To do otherwise would adversely impact growth and make it more difficult for the politicians in power to get reelected.
