A Dallas-area auto dealership group agreed to an $85,000 civil penalty levied by the Federal Trade Commission for alleged deceptive advertising practices – and for violating an earlier consent order in which the same group agreed back in 2014 to refrain from deceptive advertising, and to accept monitoring and reporting requirements for up to 20 years.

Donald Trump's Tax Proposals Could Double The Trade Deficit

Republican presidential contender Donald Trump often expresses dismay about the US trade deficit, which he ties to the loss of good paying middle class jobs.  The issue is more nuanced than Mr. Trump suggests, and his plan to impose giant tariffs on China and other countries won’t create jobs or even necessarily reduce the trade deficit.  Even more damaging, his tax proposals could double our trade deficit from $500 billion to as much as $1 trillion at current income levels.

The U.S. Cities With The Most Commercial Airbnb Listings [Infographic]

With over 2 million listings in 191 countries, Airbnb offers travellers a well-located and affordable short-term renting option in some 34,000 cities worldwide. While the platform has been praised for providing cost-effective accommodation, flexibility and competition to the hotel trade, it has been viewed as a threat to property supply in some cities. As more landlords rent their flats to travellers, locals could end up suffering from higher rents and a lack of housing.

One of the great fights in the current election season is over the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Donald Trump's campaign and supporters seem to be vehemently against it. The Global Oil Price: "It's Always Something"

The reality of the oil markets is that no one ? literally nobody ? knows what the global price of oil is going to be. Not next year, next month, next week, tomorrow or today. If they truly knew, they?d be trading in the commodity, filthy rich, living on their own private island in the South Pacific, not writing for a trade publication or speaking at a seminar.

California's Cap-And-Trade Program Is Sick And Will Take High-Speed Rail Down With It

California concluded its most recent cap-and-trade program auction last week. Out of 44,268,323 metric tons of carbon dioxide credits offered for sale by the state Air Resources Board, only 660,560 were sold, 1.5 percent of the total, raising a paltry $8.4 million out of a hoped-for $620 million.

Texas Rangers Release Josh Hamilton; But Remain Open To Re-Signing Him

This week the Texas Rangers waived former all-star and 2010 AL MVP Josh Hamilton. The once five-tool player has been plagued with injuries, including three knee surgeries since September and multiple trips to the disabled list since reuniting with the team in April 2015 after a trade with division rival the Los Angeles Angels. Hamilton had only appeared in 50 games with Texas since the trade.

Trump Is Right About One Thing: Auto Trade With Asia Is Rigged, And U.S. Looks Like A Dupe

Since the 1960s, governments from Beijing to Seoul to Tokyo have put in place barriers to allow their 'infant' car industries room to grow up. But there's no longer any justification for protection. Today, China is the world's largest producer and consumer of vehicles -- and it's starting to export U.S. brands like Buick and Cadillac to America.

Jonathan Papelbon Remains Available; Will A Contender Bring Him On For The Stretch Run?

Jonathan Papelbon is on the verge of making his decision to sign with one of several interested teams. The former Washington Nationals closer was released by the club last week, after posting a paltry 2016 season with a 4.37 ERA. Also, the club's trade in July for all-star pitcher Mark Melancon essentially cemented him as the new closer. As a result, Papelbon requested his release from the club. The Nationals are responsible for the $3 million that remains of his $11 million salary for 2016 since they released him.

Saving A Fortune. Stock & ETF Options Trading Made Easy: Including SPY, Apple and Google

If you are trading options contracts, you should consider a number of factors. Two very simple components are commissions and liquidity. SPY (SPDR S&P 500 ETF) is one of the most liquidly traded options. By liquid I mean that the difference the bid/ask price as a percentage of the value of the option is small (this evaluation only pertains to out of the money options). Small would likely mean less than one or two percent. The narrower the bid/ask spread, the greater the likelihood that you will make a profitable trade. In addition, one should evaluate the cost of commissions when trading. Analyzing these two elements is essential for establishing profitable trades.

Incorporating Energy Into Production Functions

In my last post on my Debtwatch blog, I finished by saying that the Physiocrats were the only School of economics to properly consider the role of energy in production. They ascribed it solely to agriculture exploiting the free energy of the Sun, and specifically to land, which absorbed this free energy and stored it in agricultural products. As Richard Cantillon put it in 1730:
The Land is the Source or Matter from whence all Wealth is produced. The Labour of man is the Form which produces it: and Wealth in itself is nothing but the Maintenance, Conveniencies, and Superfluities of Life. (Cantillon, Essai sur la Nature du Commerce in Général (Essay on the Nature of Trade in General)
Quesnay’s famous but neglected "Tableau Economique" therefore described the agricultural sector as “the productive sector” and manufacturing as “sterile”—see Figure 1.

An Investor Idea Dinner, Without The Seafood Tower

The most important job of any money manager is to find information that refutes their investment thesis. This constant self-doubt is what separates the out-performers from those who fall victim to group think. The ability to prioritize truth over hubris is not easy, nor is it common, but it is the sign of an individual who is likely to be on the right side of a trade more often than on the wrong side.

In Detroit, Trump's Anti-Trade Message Clashes With Auto Industry Realities

The Republican presidential nominee thinks more restrictive deals would bring jobs back to Detroit, but here's a news flash: the auto industry went global long before NAFTA was enacted, and there's no winding that back. Trump also apparently hasn’t noticed that Detroit is already on the upswing and that the U.S. auto industry just came off its best year in history.

Common Threat Pulling Old Foes Australia And Indonesia Closer Together

Five years ago Australia banned live exports of farm animals to Indonesia over suspicion of cruel treatment, setting back trade ties. Just two years after that Jakarta vented over allegations that Australian intelligence agents tried to tap Indonesian ex-president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's mobile phone. Australia reacted by reviewing relations, including a people smuggling policy crucial to keeping migrants out of Australia. The 2014 presidential election in Indonesia, a 257 million-population developing archipelago in Southeast Asia, delayed any restoration of productive ties with Australia, a much smaller but wealthier country to the south that happens to send a lot of tourists to Bali. Then last year Indonesia executed two Australian citizens for drug offenses, angering people down under again.

Trade

A basic economic concept that involves multiple parties participating in the voluntary negotiation and then the exchange of one's goods and services for desired goods and services that someone else possesses. The advent of money as a medium of exchange has allowed trade to be conducted in a manner that is much simpler and effective compared to earlier forms of trade, such as bartering.

Trade Finance

The financing of international trade. Trade finance includes such activities as lending, issuing letters of credit, factoring, export credit and insurance. Companies involved with trade finance include importers and exporters, banks and financiers, insurers and export credit agencies, as well as other service providers.

Useful Life

An estimate of how long one can expect to use an income-producing item in a trade or business setting. Useful life usually refers to the duration for which the item will be useful (to the business), and not how long the property will actually last. Many factors affect a property's useful life, including the frequency of use, the age when acquired and the repair policy and environmental conditions of the business.

How Sindyanna of Galilee Sells Olive Oil And The Hope Of Arab-Israeli Peace

Certainly, that's the hope and conviction of social activist Hadas Lahav, the CEO of Sindyanna of Galilee, a woman-run, Arab-Israeli social enterprise in northern Israel. The nonprofit, founded in 1997 and run by a staff of 15, about equally divided between Arabs and Israelis, sells premium, extra-virgin fair-trade olive oil produced in the region, much of it organic and grown by local Arab farmers. Last year, Sindyanna of Galilee, a nonprofit venture run by Arab and Israeli women in northern Israel, sold $1 million worth of olive oil and other products, to support their social and educational projects for Arab women and promote peace. Now, they're making their big push to expand in the U.S. market.

Dodgers Make Big Deadline Move in Acquiring Josh Reddick And Rich Hill

While the Chicago Cubs made some news last week with the acquisition of Aroldis Chapman, the MLB Trade Deadline, that is often filled with big names changing teams, has been remarkably quiet for its 2016 edition.
